Hotel Casey

 Demolition

On this page you will find my collection of pictures of the demolition of the Hotel Casey. A landmark in downtown Scranton, the hotel came on hard times and had to be brought down. Scroll to the bottom of this page and read up.

Hotel Casey

Our new view!

2 July 2001

This is our neighborhood now!

All cleaned up!

2 July 2001

The rubble was hauled away and a sidewalk was put in. For the first time in four years you can walk safely around the block.

Hotel Casey stuff.

These are some of the items given to us by the demolition workers. The brick in the center was from one of the upper floor windows. Window washers would clip their safety belts on the cleats, which were located on each side of the window.

15 May 2001

Only a lump of twisted steel remains.

View from the alley.

7 May 2001

As the crane pecks away at the last of the Casey, the other crane holds a screen to protect the three story Verizon Building. That building is only 12 feet away from the Casey.

Moose drops the ball!

'Moose', the crane operator, drops the ball on the last section.

The hardest part left!

16 April 2001

Two third gone! The tan building behind what's left of the Casey, the Verizon Building, contains the sensitive telephone equipment. Now comes the hard part!

Less Hotel Casey, more sunshine on Coney Island Lunch!

One third gone!!

9 April 2001

The old girl proves that they knew how to build them, as the demo crew is a couple weeks behind schedule!

Hundreds of pigeons are mad as hell,

Coney Island, Scranton Hobby and the rubble pile!

The four ton wrecking ball starts to have an affect on the old hotel.

The Excavator!  The Crane!

Above left is the excavator in the alley and former 519-521 Lackawanna Ave. On the right is the demolition crane. Note the reduction in traffic lanes

View of the Penthouse!

This view was taken from our roof.

The first bites!

12 March 2001

With the removal of the Bobcats, a new larger crane pounds the Casey with a four ton wrecking ball!

29 January 2001

The crane arrived to hoist Bobcats into the Casey to demolish all the interior walls. They will expose the steel beam skeleton, which will then be cut to ease the exterior demolition. In the left picture above, our red building and Scranton Hobby sill stand!

That's Lee, with a Bobcat!

Ready for insertion!

Hotel Casey fine china!

Some Hotel Casey mementos we have on display in our front window!

24 January 2001

The buildings at 519-521 Lackawanna Avenue are gone! The Hotel Casey is next.

19 December 2000

Demo workers cut through steel at 519 Lackawanna. The are hand removing half of the building to protect our building and Scranton Hobby, which is right next to it.

18 December 2000

Most of the third and fourth floors are gone at 519 (the green building at the top of this page) Lackawanna. Sabre Demo is hand removing that building away from 517, Scranton Hobby. They leave for the holidays at the end of this week. When they return after the 1st of January, serious demolition will begin!

25 November 2000

Things are starting to move at the demolition site. Prep work has been done at 519-521 Lackawanna Ave. The Haz-mat removal team will arrive Monday 27 November. Fencing around the site should be erected by the end of next week, too.

10 November 2000

Interior work has begun at the Casey Demolition site. Hazardous material handlers will arrive Monday. Chipping away concrete to expose the steel skeleton will begin after Christmas. Once exposed, the beams will be cut to weaken the structure so to make it easier to tear down.

Once again, Sabre Demolition has reconfirmed that we will be able to remain open through the entire process.

1 October 2000

Pearle Vision and Preno's are now dust. The Casey is next on the list. Probable start of the demolition is 15 November 2000!
